After our day in Glacier, we headed to Portland to see my family. However, that is going to be in a different, future post. This one is about another little day trip we did: Silver Falls State Park.
I was originally hoping to do a 5 mile hike that led us to 7 of the 10 waterfalls. However, after the kids got grumpy at Glacier, we weren't sure it'd be the best idea. Kyler realized we could cut 2 miles out of our hike and only one waterfall, so we went with his plan.

Including going behind it!
The kiddos thought it was amazing how they could feel the water and have the rocks dripping on them.
Then we went back to the car and drove to another trailhead and began our quest to see 5 more waterfalls.
There was another we could go behind, but it required taking a short detour off the path.
I was definitely wanting to do it, and I convinced several other groups of hikers to do it, too.
I know it's a bit further to walk, but not that much and soooo worth it!
We did joke that I should get a cut of the waterfall's commissions, though. The kids' favorite waterfall actually ended up not being one of the walk-behind ones, but the one furthest from our trailhead: Double Falls. They liked this one best because there was no barriers down to the falls, so they could go down off the main trail and climb amongst the trees. It was also another short excursion off the loop and thus a little quieter. I've decided this is a lesson in life: take the short detours and excursions because they aren't that much more time and effort and will probably end up being your favorites.
There were a few times of whiny children but that was mostly solved with small breaks, water, and Oreos.
I'd say being silly and creative helped, but honestly, it probably made things harder. The kids came up with an alternative version of "The Ants Go Marching" that was Harry Potter themed. It also caused the most arguments as they tried to come up with the best ideas for the different verses. In the end, though, it was amusing.
And Silver Falls was a great detour on the way to see Loradona!Oh, I didn't forget. Here it is: "The Wizards Go Marching"
The wizards go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah.
The wizards go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah.
The wizards go marching one by one, the little one stops for Hogsmeade fun.
And they all went marching down
To the ground
To duck a spell.
Zap, zap, zap, zap. Zap, zap, zap, zap.
The wizards go marching two by two, hurrah, hurrah.
the little one waves to his quidditch crew.
The wizards go marching three by three, hurrah, hurrah.
The little one gets whomped by a tree.
The wizards go marching four by four , hurrah, hurrah.
The little one goes through the trapdoor.
The wizards go marching five by five , hurrah, hurrah.
The little one stops to escape Privet Drive.
The wizards go marching six by six, hurrah, hurrah.
The little one stops to kill Bellatrix.
The wizards go marching seven by seven, hurrah, hurrah.
The little one visits Kings Cross heaven.
The wizards go marching eight by eight, hurrah, hurrah.
The little one has Trewlawny read his fate.
The wizards go marching nine by nine, hurrah, hurrah.
The little one's at Herbology to plant a vine.
The wizards go marching ten by ten, hurrah, hurrah.
The little one wanders into Aragog's den
And they all go marching down
Into Aragog's mouth.
The end!
Chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp. Chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp.
